Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?

The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the successes?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs, with events in over 100 countries and 580 cities around the world.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend Organizers and Facilitators can be found on every corner of the globe. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. If you want to put yourself in the shoes of an entrepreneur, register now for the best weekend of your life!

Michael Hund

Attorney at McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC

I represent publicly held and privately held businesses, as well as life sciences and other technology companies, particularly early-stage and emerging growth business involved in the commercialization of intellectual property and investors who acquire interests in such companies. I regularly counsel companies on compliance with federal securities laws, including exemptions from the registration provisions of such laws, licensing and transfer of technology to and from universities and other institutions. I regularly work with management teams in coping with the challenges of managing rapid growth following an investment by a venture capital fund or other third party investor. My practice covers a wide variety of corporate and securities law issues, including venture capital financing and other capital formation transactions for investors and for companies. I also handle mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, restructurings, and contests for corporate control.

I am a certified public accountant (inactive) and, prior to attending law school, worked with a large accounting firm. I served as an assistant chief accountant and as a senior attorney in the Division of Corporation Finance of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC. Prior to joining my current firm, I was a partner in two large Pittsburgh-based law firms. I am an adjunct professor at The Dickinson School of Law at Penn State where I teach Federal Securities Regulation.

Joe Chiarella

Founder at Colloid, LLC   |   LinkedIn

t has been a pleasure contributing to the IT and software industries, initially in one Information Technology capacity or another, then in product management and eventually in business management. The first half of that time was in two large corporations, the second half was in six startups - five of which I was founder or co-founder - and for about two years I was the sole technology officer of a “startup university”.

Three of the six startups were/are in cyber security and the three product lines I architected and/or product managed have successfully protected literally a quarter of a billion computers from various cyber threats and helped generate over 300 million dollars of revenue, about $60 million in two liquidity events, and an average 400% return on investment for startup shareholders.

Currently, I am the co-founder and President of that sixth startup, Colloid, LLC which has completed R&D on the UberCrypt Framework - a new approach in cryptosystems. In June 2013, we published the math and algorithms and are actively soliciting peer reviewers
