Startup Weekend Tips

When I first had the opportunity to attend Startup Weekend I had very little idea of what to expect.  I consulted Internet videos and communicated with those in the know and yet I was still a tad fuzzy on what was to come.  What follows is a list of a few perspectives to help navigate the weekend waters:

  • Don’t be nervous…be excited! – You would be hard pressed to find a group of more energetic and accepting individuals.  The weekend is well proctored and naturally moves along from a set of random people to distinct teams/companies in the span of 48 hours.
  • Mingle – Let’s face it, those of us who enjoy immersing ourselves in a computer screen aren’t always the first to make introductions.  Everyone is there for the same reason so don’t hesitate to start a conversation about someone’s skill set, any ideas they want to pitch or opinions about what has been pitched.
  • Communication is key – Like most everything else in life that benefits from good communication Startup Weekend is no exception. Constructive questions and input help a concept go from good to MVP and in some cases the outcome is quite different from the original pitch.
  • Stretch yourself – Sometimes being on a team requires wearing many “hats” or your specific skills may not be needed.  No problem, contribute in whatever way your team needs you: interview prospective customers, write documentation, create a slide deck and help perfect the pitch presentation.
